This particular plane, a Lockheed 10E, is an exact duplicate of the plane Amelia Earhart flew on her round-the-world attempt. There were only 14 made, and this one was flying commercially for Pan Am in South America during WWII, so it's the ONLY one that wasn't changed and/or retro-fitted for the war effort.
The story of how it was discovered and brought to Atchison is a long and fascinating one, but as of mid August or so, it's been here in Atchison, in this hangar. There was a parade through town when it arrived, but it was a 'long tadpole' without wings or tail flaps, for the road trip it took. It will be open to public viewing later this month, but I was allowed to visit and take pictures!
The plane is (and was, even before Atchison got it) named MURIEL for Amelia's sister. (Also another interesting story.)
